Core Function

The Nuclear Energy Regulation and Management Branch’s mandate is to manage the South African nuclear energy industry and control nuclear material in terms of international obligations, nuclear legislation, and policies to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The Branch executes its mandate by:

  • Implementing nuclear energy policies to ensure security of energy supply;
  • Managing and coordinating the implementation of the nuclear build programme and all matters relating to nuclear safety and technology, as required by legislation and international agreements;
  • Implementing the Technical Cooperation Programme and promoting the utilisation of nuclear technology by interfacing with regional and inter-regional organisations in the field of nuclear science and technology.
  • Leading South Africa’s global participation in promoting nuclear research, development and technology applications for peaceful use.

The Branch is divided into the following units:

Chief Directorate: National Liaison Office – Responsible for strengthening and promoting the utilization of nuclear technology.

  • Directorate: African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA)
